Internet Identity Theft Is On The Rise!

Internet safety is essential in today’s technological age. Much of our time is spent using the internet and due to the amount spent online the internet has become a hot bed for internet identity theft. Although it is not actually possible for someone to steal another individual’s identity, it is possible for your identity to be misused for fraudulent purposes. How can we prevent such theft? You may think signing up for some program such as lifelock is 100% effective and no precautions are necessary. I must advise however that no type of identity theft program is fool proof and the only way to guard against identity theft is for you to understand such protection is soley the responsibly of the individual. What are some ways to safeguard your identity?

First of all, if you work in an office (cubicle) environment you likely are given internet access and do a great deal of research online. Whether at the office or home, be careful when using your social security number. There are hackers working day and night rabidly searching for ways to access your personal info. Make sure your computer is protected with some antivirus software and any information sent out is over an encrypted signal. Secondly, regardless of how well we think you know your coworker never leave your work station open and never allow a coworker access to your computer. If at home be careful who accesses your computer and limit online usage.

In our technological age shopping online has become and is becoming easier each day. As shopping online becomes easier so does internet identity theft. When making any online purchases be certain the website you visit is on a secure server. Use your credit card number as a last resort. There is an alternative known as paypal that acts as a middle man on your behalf, using paypal does not allow access to your bank or credit card information.

Following the above simple steps can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft.
