Protecting Consumers from Fraudulent Marketing and Shoddy Products

I don’t shop that often since I don’t really make wads of cash. I think I live a pretty frugal life, something that is important to me because I’m really doing my best to save whatever extra I manage to eke out at the end of the month. So during the few times that I do buy stuff, whether it’s clothes or something for the home, or something else, it’s really important to me for the items I do buy to be worthwhile purchases. Most of the time things work out, but there have been a few occasions where I wish I could simply undo a transaction already made.

There have been times when I’ve bought merchandise that I later found to be of shoddy construction, or which did not live up to its marketing hype. It still makes me really mad when I remember those purchases. I mean, it’s one thing when a product gets worn out from regular use over time, but it’s quite another when something you buy is nowhere near as long lasting as it should be. Sometimes it makes me feel that I should complain about the products or do something, but unfortunately, I’m not really well versed regarding consumers legal rights or what exactly shoppers should be able to expect from their purchases.

I mean, I have sort of a common sense understanding of these rights, though I’m not familiar with the applicable law. So I know that the government has a role in protecting consumer groups and individuals from products which might be hazardous to their health, or which involve fraudulent marketing or promotion. I guess that I have a sense of what is just plain fair or just, and what is unfair or unjust. Companies today have so much power and influence in society, through their advertisements, through their vast resources, and so on, so an individual consumer sometimes doesn’t quite have the capacity to launch a sustainable complaint against a private entity which can do so much.
